Cruise Whenever You Want: Living on the Treasure Coast Near Florida’s Big Cruise Ports (2026)

Quick answer: If you cruise, the Treasure Coast is about as well placed as any address in America. From Port St. Lucie it's roughly 100 miles to Port Canaveral, the busiest cruise port in the world, about 95 miles to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, 115 miles to PortMiami and 46 miles to the Port of Palm Beach. That's four cruise ports within about two hours, and every major line sails from at least one of them. Royal Caribbean alone has more than a dozen ships home-ported in Florida in 2026, including Star of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas at Port Canaveral and Icon of the Seas in Miami. You drive to the ship the morning it leaves, park for about $20 a day, and you're home in time for lunch when it gets back. No airfare, no baggage rules, no hotel the night before.

Somewhere in the second or third phone call with a buyer from up north, after the beach and the golf and the taxes, a lot of them mention cruising. Sometimes it's a couple that does one big trip a year. More often it's retirees who do three or four, and they've done the math on what it costs to fly to Florida every time. Living here changes that math completely. The ship is a drive down I-95. Here's what that looks like in practice, which ports and ships are where in 2026, and where the people who cruise a lot tend to buy.

The ports at a glance

Distances are road miles from Port St. Lucie city hall. Drive times are typical without heavy traffic; add time for a Friday afternoon heading south.

Port Canaveral is the big one now

For most of the last 30 years the busiest cruise port on earth was Miami. In December 2025 Port Canaveral officially took the title, with 8.6 million passenger movements in its fiscal year, up 13 percent in a year, across 18 home-ported ships from seven cruise brands and more than 1,000 sailings. The port says about 75 percent of its passengers drive there, which tells you who it's built for: people like us. It's in the middle of a $912 million expansion that adds a seventh terminal campus, expands two more and builds more parking, so the number is going up, not down.

Royal Caribbean's newest and biggest ships are the reason a lot of people care. Star of the Seas, the second ship in the Icon class, started sailing from Port Canaveral in August 2025 and does seven night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises with a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. Utopia of the Seas, the newest Oasis class ship, is the short cruise specialist: three and four night Bahamas runs, which is what makes a Thursday to Sunday or Friday to Monday getaway realistic from here. Explorer of the Seas fills in with four and five night sailings and Adventure of the Seas with six and eight, and Harmony of the Seas is scheduled to move in later in 2026 for more short Bahamas cruises. Disney's Wish, Treasure and Fantasy sail from the same port, along with Carnival's Mardi Gras, MSC, Norwegian, Celebrity Apex and Princess.

The drive is simple: I-95 north to SR 528, then east to the port. From Port St. Lucie it's about 99 miles. From Vero Beach it's 76, from Fort Pierce 88, and from Stuart 108. Official port parking is $20 a day plus tax, paid on arrival, and that includes the day you board and the day you get off. Off-port lots run a little less if you don't mind a shuttle.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale for the big ships and the long trips

Head south instead and you get the other half of the fleet. PortMiami is where Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world when it launched in 2024, sails week long Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Wonder of the Seas does three and four night Bahamas cruises from Miami, Freedom of the Seas does four and five, and Independence of the Seas runs seven night Caribbean trips before repositioning for the summer. Royal Caribbean is headquartered on the port itself, so Miami tends to get the flagship first.

Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale is about 20 miles closer and, for most Treasure Coast residents, the easier drive because you get off I-95 before the worst of the Miami traffic. In 2026 it's home to Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas on six and eight night Caribbean cruises, Radiance of the Seas on short Bahamas runs, and Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's newest ship, which arrives after its first European summer to sail six and eight night Caribbean itineraries. Port Everglades is also where Celebrity, Princess, Holland America and most of the luxury and river lines base their Florida operations, so if your taste runs to smaller ships it's probably your port.

Practical note: for a Miami departure, most people I know leave Port St. Lucie by 8 in the morning for a noon or 1 o'clock boarding window and don't think twice about it. From Stuart it's 106 miles to Miami and 86 to Fort Lauderdale. From Hobe Sound, 96 and 74.

The Port of Palm Beach is the weekend cruise

This is the one people don't know about. The Port of Palm Beach in Riviera Beach is 46 miles from Port St. Lucie, 36 from Stuart and 21 from Hobe Sound, and Margaritaville at Sea sails from there to the Bahamas year round. Two night trips to Grand Bahama have been the staple for years, and in October 2025 the line added three night, two port weekend sailings to Nassau and Grand Bahama Island. Fares in the promotional periods have started around $160 a person. It won't replace a Royal Caribbean week, but it's a legitimate Friday to Sunday for a birthday or a visiting relative, and it's the shortest cruise drive on the whole east coast of Florida. SeaDream Yacht Club's two small yachts and American Cruise Lines also use the port on longer itineraries.

Why driving to the ship beats flying to it

  • No airfare, and no flight to miss. Cruise lines tell you to fly in the day before because a delayed flight means a missed ship. When the ship is 100 miles away, you sleep in your own bed and leave after breakfast. That's two plane tickets and a hotel night saved on every cruise, which for a couple that sails three times a year is real money.
  • Pack whatever you want. There's no checked bag fee and no 50 pound limit when the suitcase goes in your trunk. Royal Caribbean lets each stateroom bring two bottles of wine on board; drivers actually use it.
  • Last minute deals become possible. Unsold cabins get cheap in the last few weeks before sailing, but people flying in can't take advantage because the airfare eats the savings. From here, a Tuesday email about a three night Utopia sailing that Friday is something you can actually say yes to.
  • Parking costs less than a shuttle. Port Canaveral is $20 a day plus tax at the terminal. For a four night cruise that's about $100, about what one airport ride costs in a lot of northern cities.
  • Home by lunch. Ships get in around 6 or 7 in the morning. Walk off with your bags, and from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale you're back in Port St. Lucie before noon. Nobody is sitting in an airport for six hours waiting for a flight home.
  • Florida resident rates, with a caveat. Most lines offer resident fares on selected sailings, and you claim them by choosing your state of residence when you price the cruise, then showing a Florida driver's license at check in. Disney Cruise Line and Carnival post them fairly consistently. Royal Caribbean's come and go, and regulars on the cruise forums will tell you they can be hard to find, so always check the box, but don't buy a house counting on them.

What the short cruises actually visit

Almost every three, four and five night Royal Caribbean cruise from Florida stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay, the 140 acre private island in the Bahamas with the water park and the beaches, and it's included in the fare. In December 2025 the line opened Royal Beach Club Paradise Island on the Nassau side, a 17 acre beach club that's an add on, with day passes from about $99 to $129 a person depending on the season. A Royal Beach Club in Cozumel is scheduled to open at the end of 2026. The point for a local is that these short cruises have become good enough that people here do them the way people elsewhere do a long weekend at a lake house. Utopia from Port Canaveral and Wonder from Miami are built specifically for that trip.

Where the cruisers live

I'm a REALTOR, so this is the part I actually get asked. Three things matter: which port you'll use most, how far you want to drive, and whether the house can be locked and left for a week without worry. Working north to south:

Vero Beach and SebastianClosest to Port Canaveral, 76 miles from Vero. The Disney and Royal Caribbean short cruise crowd. Communities like Grand Harbor and The Moorings have the club and marina life at home and a 75 minute drive to the ship
Fort Pierce and Hutchinson Island88 miles to Canaveral, 58 to Palm Beach. Harbour Isle is the lock and leave condo answer, and Meadowood is the value golf answer, both with easy I-95 access
Port St. LucieThe middle of the map: 99 miles to Canaveral, 95 to Fort Lauderdale, 46 to Palm Beach. The 55+ communities here are full of frequent cruisers, and several run group cruises through their travel clubs. Start with Vitalia, Kings Isle and Lake Charles, or the full 55+ guide
Stuart and Palm City36 miles to Palm Beach, 86 to Fort Lauderdale, 106 to Miami. Summerfield and The Florida Club are the maintained yard, gated, leave for a week options with golf at home
Hobe Sound21 miles to Palm Beach, 74 to Fort Lauderdale, 96 to Miami, and Palm Beach International Airport 30 minutes away for the cruises that start somewhere else. The Arbors and Medalist Village are the gated, low maintenance picks

The lock and leave part is worth a sentence. People who cruise a lot want a gate, a yard the association mows, hurricane rated windows or shutters they don't have to put up, and neighbors who notice things. That's a good description of most of the gated communities on the coast, and it's the reason condos and villas sell to cruisers faster than big lots do. If you're deciding between the two big towns, my Port St. Lucie versus Stuart guide covers the rest of the trade offs.

A few things to know before you count on it

Hurricane season runs June through November and the lines reroute or shorten cruises when a storm is in the way, which is a bigger deal for a Caribbean itinerary than for the house. Closed loop cruises that start and end at the same U.S. port let American citizens sail with a birth certificate and a government ID, but a passport is the sane choice, because if you have to fly home from an island you'll need it. The Brightline train doesn't reach any of the ports; it stops in West Palm Beach and at Orlando's airport, which is 45 minutes from Port Canaveral, so the car is still the way. And I-95 through Palm Beach and Broward on a Friday afternoon is the one part of this that isn't easy, so for a Miami departure I'd leave early and have breakfast down there.

What I can do

If cruising is part of why you're moving, tell me which port you'll use most and how often, and I'll shape the search around it: the neighborhoods with the shortest drive, the communities that are built to be locked and left, and the ones where your neighbors will be on the same ship. I've had buyers pick the Treasure Coast over both Orlando and South Florida for exactly this reason. They wanted the beach and the quiet, and they wanted the ports within reach instead of on top of them.

Questions cruisers ask about living here

How far is Port St. Lucie from Port Canaveral?

About 99 road miles, roughly an hour and 40 minutes up I-95 and SR 528 without heavy traffic. Vero Beach is about 76 miles from the port, Fort Pierce 88, and Stuart 108.

Which cruise port is closest to the Treasure Coast?

The Port of Palm Beach in Riviera Beach: about 46 miles from Port St. Lucie, 36 from Stuart and 21 from Hobe Sound. It's a small port, mainly Margaritaville at Sea's two and three night Bahamas cruises. For Royal Caribbean and the other major lines, Port Canaveral and Port Everglades are each about 95 to 100 miles from Port St. Lucie.

Which Royal Caribbean ships sail from Port Canaveral in 2026?

Star of the Seas on seven night Caribbean cruises, Utopia of the Seas on three and four night Bahamas cruises, Explorer of the Seas on four and five night trips and Adventure of the Seas on six and eight night trips, with Harmony of the Seas scheduled to join later in the year for short Bahamas sailings. Icon of the Seas sails from Miami, and Oasis, Allure and the new Legend of the Seas from Fort Lauderdale.

Do Florida residents get discounts on cruises?

Sometimes. Most lines offer resident rates on selected sailings, claimed by choosing your state of residence when pricing and showing a Florida license at check in. Disney Cruise Line and Carnival post them fairly regularly; Royal Caribbean's appear and disappear and can be hard to find. The bigger savings for residents is not needing airfare or a hotel.

Can I do a weekend cruise from the Treasure Coast?

Yes. Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral and Wonder of the Seas from Miami run three and four night Bahamas cruises, and Margaritaville at Sea runs two and three night Bahamas cruises from the Port of Palm Beach, less than an hour from Port St. Lucie.

What does parking cost at Port Canaveral?

Official port parking is $20 a day plus tax as of 2026, paid when you arrive, and it covers both your boarding day and your return day. Private lots near the port charge a little less and shuttle you in.
