Lake Charles in Port St. Lucie: A 2026 Guide to St. Lucie West’s Lake Community
Quick answer: Lake Charles is a guard-gated, all-ages community in St. Lucie West, Port St. Lucie, with about 1,128 homes on more than 500 acres, over 100 of them lake. There is no golf course and no club, so the HOA fee covers the gate, lawn care and cable. Recent listings have run from roughly the high $200,000s for townhomes to the $800,000s for larger lakefront homes.
Lake Charles gets recommended a lot by people who already live in it, which tells you something. It's not a country club and it doesn't pretend to be one. It's a big, well-kept neighborhood built around water, with a guard at the gate and a clubhouse people actually use. If you want the amenities of a club community without the second bill every year, this is one of the first places in Port St. Lucie to look.

What you actually get here
The center of the community is the Beach Clubhouse, which sits on the main lake. Heated pool and spa, a library and media room, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, basketball, bocce, shuffleboard, a playground and picnic areas. There are about nine miles of lit sidewalks, which matters more than it sounds if you walk a dog at night in the summer.
The lakes are the thing that sets Lake Charles apart from the other gated neighborhoods in St. Lucie West. Seven of them link up, and you can put a kayak, a canoe or an electric boat in at the clubhouse ramp. No gas motors. Fishing is catch and release. Some of the single-family models were built with a detached guest suite and a courtyard pool, which is a nice setup for visiting family or a home office.
Homes and what they cost
Single-family homes run from about 1,200 square feet up past 3,400, with two to five bedrooms. The townhomes are in the Harbour Isles section, built by Pulte, mostly 1,450 to 2,100 square feet. Because the community was built over roughly a decade, you'll see a range of ages and finishes, and the lakefront lots carry a real premium over interior ones.
Recent listing snapshots put the low end in the high $200,000s for townhomes and the high end in the $800,000s for the bigger lakefront homes. For context, Redfin had the St. Lucie West median at about $349,000 in mid-2025 and the Port St. Lucie citywide median just under $400,000 in mid-2026. Lake Charles sits above both because of the gate and the water. If you're comparing it against a newer build in Verano or PGA Village, you're usually trading new-construction finishes for mature landscaping and lake lots.
The fees, and why the numbers online don't match
Lake Charles has one HOA fee and no club. The HOA's own site says it covers landscape care, basic cable and internet. Brokers add the gate staff, common areas and an on-site manager. What it costs is where the sources fall apart. There is an HOA fee, and the listing sites don't agree on it; two of them even flip which figure is single-family and which is townhome. Treat all of that as a range and get the current HOA statement before you make an offer. A 2026 fee guide names Lake Charles as an example of a standard gated community in Port St. Lucie.
One more line item to know about: St. Lucie West is served by the St. Lucie West Services District, which bills a separate assessment for water, wastewater, stormwater and reclaimed irrigation on the tax bill. That assessment has been rising. It's not a CDD in the Tradition sense, but you'll want to see it on a sample tax bill for the exact lot.
Who it suits
It's an all-ages community with a playground and a lot of families, but it also has a steady population of retirees who wanted a gate and a pool without golf dues. The location is the other draw. You're a few minutes from I-95, and St. Lucie West puts you next to Clover Park where the Mets train, the PGA Golf Club courses, and most of the shopping and restaurants on that side of town. If you'd rather be near the water than a golf course, and you want to keep the monthly nut reasonable, Lake Charles belongs on the short list.
A couple of rules to confirm with the HOA: one brokerage lists a two-pet limit with breed restrictions and a six-month minimum on rentals. Those are typical for this type of community but check the current documents.
