Universal Orlando From the Treasure Coast: Epic Universe, Horror Nights and Resident Deals (2026)

Quick answer: Universal Orlando Resort is about 123 miles from Port St. Lucie and 103 from Vero Beach, the same two hour Turnpike drive as Disney, a few exits farther north on I-4. It's three theme parks now: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe, which opened May 22, 2025 and is the best new theme park in the country, plus the Volcano Bay water park. Florida residents get real deals: a two park unlimited days ticket for $199 through mid December 2026, a three park three day ticket from $255, and annual passes from $325 to $790 with a monthly payment plan, though no pass includes Epic Universe yet. Parking is $35, free after 6 p.m. at the original two parks. Halloween Horror Nights runs select nights August 28 to November 1, 2026 with ten houses, from about $89 a night, and it's the single biggest reason Treasure Coast people drive to Orlando in the fall.

If Disney is the grandparent trip, Universal is the one the teenagers and the adult kids ask for, and for a lot of people under 50 it's the better park system. Since Epic Universe opened in May 2025 it's also the newest. From the Treasure Coast it's the same drive as Disney, a straight shot up the Turnpike to I-4, and because two of the three parks sit right next to each other and the third is ten minutes away, it's an easier day than Disney to make up as you go. This is the Universal half of my Disney from the Treasure Coast guide, written the same way: what it costs a Florida resident, what's new, and how locals do it.

Three parks, and which one is which

Universal Studios Florida is the movie park: Diagon Alley with Escape from Gringotts, the Hogwarts Express to the other park, Revenge of the Mummy, Men in Black, Transformers, the Simpsons area, E.T., Minion Land and the Bourne Stuntacular stage show. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit closed in August 2025 and is being replaced by Fast and Furious: Hollywood Drift, a launch coaster with a 170 foot spike, opening in 2027. The Fast and Furious Supercharged ride closed in August 2026, and the Animal Actors show closes November 3.

Islands of Adventure is the ride park: Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey in Hogsmeade, the VelociCoaster, which is the best coaster in Florida, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Dudley Do-Right's flume, Popeye's barges and Seuss Landing for the small kids. Jurassic Park River Adventure has been closed all year and is expected back November 19, 2026. The Lost Continent area is closing in phases for a new land that hasn't been announced.

Epic Universe opened May 22, 2025 and it's the reason to go right now. Five worlds around a central park: Celestial Park with the Stardust Racers dueling coaster, Super Nintendo World with Mario Kart and the Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness coaster, the Wizarding World's Ministry of Magic with Battle at the Ministry, How to Train Your Dragon's Isle of Berk with Hiccup's Wing Gliders, and Dark Universe with Monsters Unchained and the Curse of the Werewolf coaster. A fireworks show, Universal Celestial Goodnight, was added in July 2026. Three hotels sit on the property: the Helios Grand inside the park gate, and Stella Nova and Terra Luna across the street from about $147 a night on longer stays. One rule to know: on a one or two day ticket, Epic is its own day, no hopping. Three day and longer park to park tickets let you move among all three.

What Florida residents actually pay

Universal has always been more aggressive than Disney on resident pricing, and fall 2026 is a good example. The two park unlimited days ticket is $199 plus tax for Studios and Islands, good on non blockout days through December 16, 2026, which works out to less than a single day at walk up prices if you go twice. The three park version is $255 for three days, one park per day with Epic getting its own day, or $285 with two park to park days plus an Epic day, through December 23. You buy online, show a Florida ID at the gate, and the tickets exclude the separately ticketed events like Horror Nights.

The annual passes come in four tiers for the two original parks, all Florida resident prices plus tax: Seasonal $325 with the most blockouts (all of September was blocked this year), Power $375, Preferred $530 with no blockouts and early park admission, and Premier $790 with Express Pass after 4 p.m., free valet and free Horror Nights nights on select dates. Every tier has a FlexPay option, a down payment plus eleven monthly payments, so Preferred is about $282 down and $26 a month. The three park versions that add Volcano Bay run $375 to $900, but FlexPay on those is paused while the water park is closed for maintenance. The catch, and it's a real one: no annual pass includes Epic Universe. Passholders get 15 percent off a one day Epic add on, which puts it around $120 to $175 depending on the date. For a Treasure Coast household that goes to Epic twice a year and the original parks six times, the Preferred pass plus two Epic days is still cheaper than walk up tickets by a wide margin.

Halloween Horror Nights, and the holidays

This is the event that fills the Turnpike in October. Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs select nights August 28 to November 1, 2026 at Universal Studios Florida, with ten haunted houses this year including Stranger Things, Sinners, Hellraiser, Evil Dead and an Ozzy Osbourne house, plus scare zones and shows. It's a separate ticket from about $89 a night, with multi night passes from about $230 and Express from $200, and there's no Florida resident discount on the single night ticket this year. Two things for a local: the free after 6 parking doesn't apply on event nights, and the drive home at 1 a.m. is two hours, so a lot of people book a room at Stella Nova or Terra Luna and make it a night. Book the Sunday through Thursday nights, which are dramatically less crowded.

The holidays run November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027: the nightly Macy's parade with the giant balloons at Universal Studios, Grinchmas in Seuss Landing, Hogsmeade lit for Christmas, and for the first time this year Epic Universe gets its own holiday decorations. No extra ticket.

How locals do Universal

  • Do Epic as its own day. It's the newest park in the country and it deserves a full day from opening. Leave Port St. Lucie at 6:30, park by 8:30, ride Stardust Racers and Mario Kart first. Express at Epic is $200 and rarely worth it on a weekday; on a Saturday it might be.
  • Buy the resident ticket, not the day ticket. The $199 unlimited days ticket pays for itself the second visit. If you're going to Universal even twice this fall, this is the only ticket that makes sense.
  • Come after 4 for the original parks. Studios and Islands share a garage that's free after 6, and a Premier passholder's Express kicks in at 4. An afternoon and evening across both parks with the Hogwarts Express between them is a very good five hours, and CityWalk is right there for dinner with no ticket at all.
  • Use single rider lines. Hulk, VelociCoaster, Forbidden Journey, Gringotts and Mummy all have them, and they routinely cut a 60 minute wait to 15 for a couple who doesn't mind riding apart.
  • Book Horror Nights early and on a weeknight. Sunday through Thursday, arrive at the 6:30 gate, do the two houses you care about first, and skip the Friday and Saturday nights in October entirely.

Who this is for

Universal is the reason the adult kids come down. Where Disney sells to the grandparents in Vitalia and Riverland, Universal sells to the families in Veranda Gardens and Lake Charles with kids over 48 inches, and to the couples in their thirties and forties who moved here from up north and want Orlando to be a Saturday instead of a flight. For a household that does both, the Treasure Coast is the right place to be: two hours from either gate, ten minutes from the beach, and an hour from the cruise ports the other direction. The Disney side of the trip is in my guides to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.
