October in Florida: Horror Nights, Stone Crabs, Fantasy Fest and the First Night You Open the Windows (2026)

Quick answer: October is the best month to be in Florida and I'll argue that with anyone. The heat finally backs off, usually around the second or third week, and the whole state throws a party about it. Halloween Horror Nights runs through November 1, Busch Gardens and SeaWorld have their scare nights, LEGOLAND does the little-kid version, stone crab season opens October 15, Fantasy Fest takes over Key West October 16 to 25, and the Fort Lauderdale boat show closes the month October 28 to November 1. Mickey's Halloween party is already sold out for the year, so if you wanted that one, you're waiting for 2027.

People up north think Florida's season is winter. It isn't. Winter is when everybody else shows up. October is ours. The first real front usually comes through sometime around the middle of the month, the dew point drops out of the 70s, and one evening you walk outside after dinner and it's actually nice. You open the windows. The neighbors come out. The whole state exhales. Then we spend the next three weeks going to things, because after four months of hiding from the heat, everybody wants to be outdoors again.

I'm writing this on October 9, so some early-month stuff has already come and gone. Here's what's still ahead, roughly in the order I'd care about it. If you're on the Treasure Coast specifically, I did a separate one just for us, down to the trunk-or-treats.

The theme parks, honestly ranked

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal is the big one, and it's not close. This is year 35, it runs select nights through November 1, and the lineup is ten houses this time: Stranger Things, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, an Ozzy Osbourne house, and a Jack the clown house for the longtime fans. Universal says kids under 13 shouldn't go and they mean it. It's not a "scary for little ones" warning, it's actors with chainsaws in the dark. Single nights start around $89 and go up on weekends. Go on a weeknight if you can, because Saturday lines for the popular houses can run two hours. From the Treasure Coast it's about two hours on the Turnpike, and the smart move is to go up in the afternoon, do the daytime park on a combo ticket, and stay for the event. My Universal guide has the drive and the parking details.

Howl-O-Scream is the one people forget about, and there are two: Busch Gardens in Tampa and SeaWorld in Orlando. Both run select nights through October 31. Busch Gardens has six houses this year including a new one called Anaconda, which tells you roughly what to expect. Tickets start around $49, which is about half of Horror Nights, and the crowds are lighter. SeaWorld's version starts at $48 and is built around the same idea: dark park, scare zones, the coasters running at night. If you want the scare without the Universal price tag and the Universal crowd, this is the answer.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom is the opposite end: a separately ticketed night with candy stations, the Boo to You parade and the villains fireworks, for families with kids who would not survive the thing above. It runs through October 31. Here's the catch for 2026: Disney says every single party date is sold out. Every one. If you didn't buy in the summer, you're out, and the only honest advice is to put a reminder in your phone for next May. The daytime Magic Kingdom is still decorated for fall and still open, and my Magic Kingdom guide covers doing that as a day trip.

Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND in Winter Haven is the little-kid Halloween, included with regular admission on 18 select dates through October 31. Costumes, trick-or-treat trails, a parade with LEGO characters, nothing that will scare a four year old. If you've got kids under eight this is the one.

SeaWorld's Spooktacular is the daytime, family version of their park, included with admission through November 1, with trick-or-treat stations and a sea-themed take on the whole thing. Worth knowing because you can do the family version by day and the scare version by night on the same visit.

One more Disney thing that isn't Halloween at all. The EPCOT Food and Wine Festival runs through November 21, it's included with regular park admission, and the Eat to the Beat concerts are free with your ticket. A Saturday walking the World Showcase eating small plates from twenty countries is a very good day. EPCOT guide here if you haven't done it from this side of the state before.

Stone crab season opens October 15

If you've never had stone crab claws, you moved here for a reason you didn't know about yet. Season opens October 15 statewide, and for about a week after that every fish house from Naples to Jensen Beach has a line. They're served cold with mustard sauce, you crack them at the table, and the crabs go back in the water missing one claw to grow another one. The Naples Stone Crab Festival is October 23 to 25 and opens with a first claw cracking that's more ceremony than you'd think. On this coast, you just go to a fish market on the 15th or 16th and buy a pound. The first week's claws are the best of the year.

While we're on seafood: the Cedar Key Seafood Festival is October 17 and 18 on the Gulf, the SoBe Seafood Festival is October 21 to 24 in Miami Beach, and the big one, the Florida Seafood Festival in Apalachicola, is November 6 and 7 if you want an excuse for a Panhandle road trip.

Fantasy Fest, Key West, October 16 to 25

I have to describe this carefully because this is a family website. Fantasy Fest is ten days of costume parties, street fairs and a parade down Duval Street, and this year's theme is Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals. The daytime stuff, the pet masquerade, the Goombay street festival in Bahama Village, the kids' events, is fine for families. The late-night scene on upper Duval is not, and the costumes get... minimal. The parade is Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m. If you're going, you needed a hotel months ago; if you're going for the parade only, drive down that morning from Marathon or Key Largo. From Port St. Lucie it's about five hours. It's worth doing once.

Biketoberfest, Daytona, October 15 to 18

Thirty-fourth year. Four days of motorcycles on Main Street, racing at the Speedway, rides out through the Ocala National Forest, live music everywhere. Even if you don't ride, Daytona in mid-October with tens of thousands of bikes in town is something to see from a bar stool on Main Street. If you do ride, the Loop north of Ormond Beach is the best 30 miles of road in Florida and this is the weekend to do it with company.

The boat show, October 28 to November 1

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the largest in-water boat show in the world and it closes the month. Superyachts you can tour if you're dressed right, center consoles you can actually afford, and every electronics and engine company in the business with a booth. If you're thinking about buying a boat, this is the one weekend a year you can see everything in one place and let the dealers fight over you. If you're thinking about joining a boat club instead, which is the right call for most people in their first Florida year, I wrote about why.

The haunted stuff that isn't a theme park

Florida has a real independent haunt scene and October is its month. Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach runs multiple nights through the month with a few haunted houses and a midway, and it's the closest big one to the Treasure Coast. In the Orlando area, Scream-A-Geddon in Dade City runs through November 1 and has an opt-in version where the actors can touch you, which tells you who it's for. A Petrified Forest in Altamonte Springs and Sir Henry's Haunted Trail in Plant City are the outdoor walk-through type, better in cool weather, which, again, is why October. And St. Augustine, which sells ghost tours year round, is at its best this month: old city, cooler nights, a cemetery on every corner.

Family things that don't involve a scare actor

The Boynton Beach Haunted Pirate Fest and Mermaid Splash is October 31 and November 1 downtown, free, with a parade, a costume contest and a haunted trail that's pitched at kids. Delray Beach's Kidsfest and Halloween Parade is October 24. Clematis by FRIGHT in West Palm Beach is October 29, free, with hayrides and trick-or-treating on the street. The Mount Dora Craft Fair, October 24 and 25, is 400 vendors in the prettiest little downtown in Central Florida, and the Pioneer Days Festival in Lake Wales the same weekend is the old-Florida version with a pumpkin patch. Panama City Beach does its Pirates of the High Seas fest October 9 to 11 if you're already up that way.

And every town has an Oktoberfest. Lantana's has been going 52 years and runs two weekends, October 9 to 11 and 16 to 18. Vero Beach's is October 16 to 18 at the fairgrounds, eight dollars, kids free. I've never met a bad Oktoberfest.

The weather, and the one thing nobody wants to say

October on this coast averages highs in the mid 80s early in the month and low 80s by Halloween, with nights that finally drop into the 60s once a front gets through. The ocean is still 80 degrees. It's the best beach month of the year because the water's warm, the crowds are gone and the afternoon storms have mostly quit.

The thing nobody wants to say: hurricane season runs through November 30, and October storms are real. We've had them. The odds drop fast through the month, but if you're traveling here, buy the trip insurance and watch the tropics the week before. If you live here, your shutters stay accessible until Thanksgiving and then you can relax. Sea turtle nesting season also ends October 31, so the beach lights come back on and the nests you've been stepping around all summer are done.

What I'd actually do

If I had one free weekend left in the month: stone crab claws from a local fish house on the 16th, Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens on a Friday night for the value, and the boat show on the last Saturday to look at things I shouldn't buy. If I had kids under ten: LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat, the pumpkin patch nearest the house, and Boynton's pirate fest on Halloween weekend. If I had friends visiting from up north: the beach on a Tuesday, because they will not believe it's October.

And if you're reading this from somewhere with frost on the windshield already, this is the month people decide to move. October is when the "we're done with winter" calls start. The New Jersey and Connecticut guides are where I'd start, and the phone number below works.

Questions I get about October in Florida

When does Halloween Horror Nights 2026 end?

Halloween Horror Nights 35 at Universal Orlando runs select nights from August 28 through November 1, 2026. Universal advises that kids under 13 not attend. Single-night tickets start around $89 and weekends cost more, so a weeknight is the cheaper, shorter-line choice.

Is Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party sold out for 2026?

Yes. As of early October, Disney lists every 2026 party date as sold out. The daytime Magic Kingdom is still decorated for the season and open with a regular ticket. Tickets for next year typically go on sale in the spring, so set a reminder for May 2027.

When does stone crab season open in Florida?

October 15, and it runs through May 1. The first week's claws are the ones to get. The Naples Stone Crab Festival is October 23 to 25, but any good fish market on the Treasure Coast will have fresh claws within a day or two of the opener.

Is Fantasy Fest family friendly?

Parts of it. The daytime events, the pet masquerade and the Goombay street festival are fine for families. The late-night scene on upper Duval Street is adults only and the costumes are not for kids. Fantasy Fest 2026 runs October 16 to 25 in Key West, with the parade on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m.

Is October still hurricane season in Florida?

Yes, the season runs through November 30, and October storms happen. The odds fall quickly through the month, but travelers should buy trip insurance and check the tropics the week before. Residents should keep shutters and supplies handy until Thanksgiving.

What's the weather like in Florida in October?

On the east coast, highs run in the mid 80s early in the month and low 80s by Halloween. The first cold front usually arrives mid-month and drops nights into the 60s and the humidity along with it. The ocean stays around 80 degrees, which makes October one of the best beach months of the year.
