Disney, Universal and Epic Universe From the Space Coast: An Hour Away and Home for Dinner (2026)

Quick answer: Walt Disney World is about 70 miles from Melbourne, Viera and Cocoa Beach, roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by car. Universal Orlando and Epic Universe are closer: 57 to 59 miles from Viera and Cocoa Beach, about an hour, and 67 to 69 from Melbourne. The route is the Beachline, SR 528, with SunPass tolls that add up to a few dollars each way. Florida residents get real discounts. Disney's year-round resident offer is 40 percent off 4-day and 30 percent off 3-day tickets, and its summer ticket was $219 to $259 for two to four days. Universal's resident deals this fall are a $199 unlimited two-park ticket through December 16 and a $255 three-day, three-park ticket that includes one day at Epic Universe. Annual passes start at $499 at Disney (Pixie Dust, residents only) and $324.99 at Universal (2-Park Seasonal). Closer to home, Kennedy Space Center is $77 a day or $149 for an annual pass with free parking, and Brevard residents get in for $21 the weeks of October 12 through 25.

Here's the Space Coast's quiet advantage over every other beach county in Florida: Orlando is one road away. The Beachline runs from Cocoa straight to the airport and the parks, and most of the people I work with who have kids or grandkids end up with an annual pass within a year of moving. You can be at Epic Universe at opening, ride the big stuff, and be eating dinner on the Banana River by seven. Here's what it actually costs and takes as of early October 2026. Prices change every season, and the resident offers change more than that, so treat the numbers as a starting point and check the official pages before you buy.

The drive

By car, give or take traffic on I-4 at the end: Walt Disney World is 70 miles and about an hour and 16 minutes from Viera, 70 miles and an hour and 28 from Melbourne, 71 miles and an hour and 25 from Cocoa Beach. Universal Orlando is 58 miles and an hour and 4 minutes from Viera, 69 miles and an hour and 19 from Melbourne, 59 miles and an hour and 13 from Cocoa Beach. Epic Universe, Universal's newest park, is a mile or two closer still: 57 miles and an hour and 3 from Viera. The practical difference: from the Viera and Rockledge side of the county, Universal is a comfortable day trip and Disney is a long one. From Palm Bay or Melbourne Beach, add 15 minutes to everything.

The road is SR 528, the Beachline. The Central Florida Expressway runs the 23 miles from Boggy Creek Road to SR 520, and the Turnpike runs the pieces at either end. With a SunPass or E-PASS, the two-axle rates as of July 2026 are $1.08 at the Beachline main plaza, 64 cents at the Dallas plaza (plus the Turnpike's 28-cent share), and $1.38 at Boggy Creek if you continue toward the airport and I-4; paying by plate roughly doubles each one. Call it four to six dollars each way to the parks with a transponder. Get the transponder; it's the cheapest thing you'll buy for the move.

Disney World for Florida residents

Disney runs a year-round resident offer that's been 40 percent off the 4-day ticket and 30 percent off the 3-day compared to the non-resident price, one park per day, with the 4-day used within seven days of the start and the 3-day within five, and no park reservation needed. The dollar amount varies by the dates you pick. The seasonal deals are where the real value is: the summer ticket was $219 for two days, $239 for three and $259 for four, plus tax, through October 3 with no blockout dates; last winter's Discover Disney ticket was $255 for four days and $235 for three from January through mid May; and a two-day EPCOT and Animal Kingdom ticket ran $190. Watch the Florida resident page in early January; the winter offer usually drops the first or second week of the year. Proof of residency gets checked online or at the window for every adult.

Annual passes went up on October 6, 2026. The Pixie Dust Pass, residents only with weekend and holiday blockouts, is $499. The Pirate Pass, residents only with peak and holiday blockouts, is $909. The Sorcerer Pass, for residents and DVC members with a few holiday blockouts, is $1,139. The Incredi-Pass, no blockouts and open to anyone, is $1,749. Residents can pay monthly at zero percent after a down payment, which is how most Space Coast families do it. Standard parking at the parks is $35 a day, free for resort guests and some passholders.

Universal Orlando and Epic Universe for Florida residents

Universal is more aggressive with residents, and right now it has two offers worth knowing. The 2-Park Unlimited Days ticket is $199 plus tax for unlimited visits to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure through December 16, 2026; it excludes Epic Universe and Volcano Bay and can't be bought at the gate. The 3-Day, 3-Park ticket, new this September, is $255 plus tax, one day each at the two original parks and one day at Epic Universe, usable through December 23 on non-consecutive days, with some blockout dates; the park-to-park version is $285. Residents also get up to 35 percent off Sunday through Thursday stays at four Universal hotels through December 24.

Epic Universe opened May 22, 2025, on 110 acres: Celestial Park in the middle, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon's Isle of Berk, Super Nintendo World and the Ministry of Magic wing of the Wizarding World. The rides people drive from Viera for are Battle at the Ministry, Mario Kart, Hiccup's Wing Gliders, Stardust Racers and Monsters Unchained. No annual pass includes it yet; passholders get 15 percent off a one-day Epic Universe add-on on select dates.

Universal's Florida resident annual passes for 2026 start at $324.99 plus tax for the 2-Park Seasonal, $375 for 2-Park Power or 3-Park Seasonal, and $435 for 3-Park Power, with Preferred and Premier above that; FlexPay splits them into a down payment and 11 monthly payments at zero percent. The Seasonal passes don't include parking and have blockouts; Preferred and Premier park free after the first visit. One thing to know this winter: Volcano Bay closes for maintenance from October 26, 2026 and reopens by April 1, 2027.

The parks in your own county

I'd be a bad neighbor if I didn't point out that the two best attractions for a Space Coast family are twenty minutes from home. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is $77 for adults and $67 for kids 3 to 11 for a day, $91 and $81 for two visits within six months, and the Atlantis Annual Pass is $149 for adults and $120 for kids with free parking, which is a $15 value every visit. The Salute to Brevard rate is $21 for adults and $16 for kids plus tax, October 12 through 25, bought on site, up to six per party; if you're a resident and you've never been, this is the fortnight. And on a launch day the price of admission includes the best seat on the coast.

Brevard Zoo in Viera is $34.95 for adults and $22.95 for kids online, open 9:30 to 5, with memberships from $109.95 for one adult and $259.95 for a two-adult household. It's the zoo with kayaks through the exhibits and a treetop course, and the one that runs Boo at the Zoo in October and the lights in December.

How this changes where you buy

If the parks are a monthly thing, the north and west side of the county wins: Viera, Rockledge, Suntree and Cocoa put you on the 528 in ten minutes. Titusville is the same distance to Orlando by a different road, SR 50 or the 528, and the cheapest houses in the county. If the parks are a twice-a-year thing, buy wherever the beach and the job put you; the extra 15 minutes from Melbourne is a podcast. Either way, a Florida resident pass and a SunPass turn the drive into a habit, and a house with a garage keeps the stroller out of the rain. The Space Coast relocation page has the towns, and the Treasure Coast version of this post is the comparison if you're deciding between the two coasts.
