Moving to Palm Beach County to Fish: The Inlets, the Gulf Stream, the Loxahatchee and Where to Live for Each (2026)

Quick answer: Palm Beach County is four fisheries. The ocean, where the National Weather Service put the west wall of the Gulf Stream 3 nautical miles off Lake Worth and 6 off Jupiter Inlet on October 14, 2026, and where sailfish arrive with the first November cold front and stay into March. The inlets: Jupiter, Lake Worth, Boynton and Boca, three of which NOAA's Coast Pilot calls dangerous for small boats. The Loxahatchee River, Wild and Scenic since 1985 and the snook water behind Jupiter and Tequesta. And Lake Okeechobee, 730 square miles of bass and crappie, 45 miles west of the coast at Belle Glade. The rules: snook is closed December 15 through January 31 and June 1 through August 31, 28 to 32 inches, one fish, $10 permit on top of the $17 resident license; sailfish must be 63 inches and nearly everyone releases them; stone crab season opened October 15, and lobster runs through March 31. Where to live: Jupiter and Tequesta for the river and the north inlet, Singer Island and Palm Beach Shores for the port inlet and the shortest run to the Stream, Boynton Beach for an inlet on a smaller budget behind an 18-foot fixed bridge, and Boca Raton only inside the city limits, where the ramp permit is $210 instead of $775.

If you're moving here to fish, the thing to understand about Palm Beach County is distance. The Gulf Stream, which I put at 15 to 30 miles out from Port Canaveral in the Space Coast guide, sits a few miles off this beach. NOAA's Coast Pilot describes West Palm Beach's climate as shaped by the Stream being "only about 2 miles offshore," and on October 14, 2026, the National Weather Service in Miami put its west wall 3 nautical miles east northeast of Lake Worth and 6 nautical miles east southeast of Jupiter Inlet. That's why the tournament that calls itself the world's oldest sailfish derby is here and why a 24-foot center console is an offshore boat in this county. Here's what's biting where, what the inlets are really like, the rules as of mid-October 2026, the ramps and marinas, and where I'd buy if I wanted a particular fish ten minutes away.

The four inlets

There are four cuts to the ocean in the county, and only one, Lake Worth Inlet at the Port of Palm Beach, is a deep federal ship channel. The other three come with warnings in NOAA's Coast Pilot that I'd take seriously, especially if your boating experience is lakes up north.

InletWhat NOAA's Coast Pilot saysBridge to plan aroundPublic access
Jupiter Inlet"Dangerous and particularly hazardous to small boats not designed for the open seas." The bar "usually lies 1 or 2 feet below the surface" and breaking seas "frequently exist over the sandbars."None over the inlet itself. The south jetty, which the inlet district calls a popular fishing spot; Burt Reynolds Park ramps
Lake Worth Inlet (Palm Beach Inlet)A federal project with a 35-foot entrance channel and a 33-foot inner channel. The north side of the entrance "tends to shoal along the north jetty."Blue Heron Bridge, just inside the inlet, is fixed at 65 feet.Phil Foster Park ramps, Sailfish Marina
Boynton Inlet (South Lake Worth Inlet)"Dangerous and particularly hazardous to small boats not designed for open seas." Except in a flat calm, "breaking and confused seas exist in the channel from the bridge to the mouth."State Road A1A fixed span, 18 feet of clearance.Ocean Inlet Park in Ocean Ridge; Boynton Harbor Marina's charter fleet
Boca Raton Inlet"Dangerous and particularly hazardous to all boats not designed for open seas." Shoaling and sandbars "are continually shifting."The city's dredge and its pipe can block the channel; monitor VHF 68.Silver Palm Park ramp, where the dredge tug ties up

Jupiter Inlet is the pretty one, with the lighthouse on the north side 146 feet above the water, and it's the one that moves. The Coast Pilot says the sandbar where the Intracoastal meets the entrance "builds up continuously" and that anyone using the inlet should be an experienced boatman with local knowledge. The Jupiter Inlet District maintains the markers inside, surveys the bottom twice a year and dredges an average of 60,000 cubic yards a year out of the sand trap just inside the mouth; the north jetty is 800 feet and the south jetty 1,200. Check the inlet the morning you go, know your draft to the inch, and follow a bigger boat out the first few times.

Lake Worth Inlet is the port's ship channel and the easy one: two jetties, 35 feet at the entrance and 33 inside. The Blue Heron Bridge just inside it is a fixed 65-foot span, which is why the big sportfish boats live on the Singer Island and Palm Beach Shores side and why the county's Phil Foster Park ramps under the bridge run 24 hours.

Boynton Inlet, officially the South Lake Worth Inlet, was designed to flush the Intracoastal, not to carry boats, and it has never been made a federal channel. The A1A bridge over it is a fixed span that opened in 1975 with 18 feet of clearance, which rules out sailboats and most boats with a tower. Boynton Beach commissioners floated widening the inlet and replacing the bridge at a March 26, 2026 workshop, but there's no plan: a 2009 city committee studied the same ideas and recommended leaving the inlet alone after engineers warned that widening it would push more storm surge into Intracoastal neighborhoods. Ocean Inlet Park, 6990 North Ocean Boulevard, is the county park on it.

Boca Raton Inlet gets the strongest language in the Coast Pilot, which says anyone using it "should be extremely knowledgeable of the area." The city runs its own dredge in the inlet continuously, Tuesday through Friday in daylight, pumping sand to the beach south of the south jetty; it tells boaters the inlet "continually shoals," to monitor VHF channel 68 while the dredge works, and to expect the dredge, pipe and tug to block the channel at times.

The Gulf Stream and sailfish season

Visit Florida's billfish guide says the sailfish show up soon after the first big cold front, typically in November, and stay until the last front, which can run from February into late March; it rates January, February, November and December the best months, with July the summer exception and April, May and October the slow ones. Juno Bait's October 15 report, the day I wrote this, had dolphin on the weed lines in 500 to 700 feet, blackfin tuna on jigs and small feathers, wahoo mixed in on planers, and a late mullet push that brought tarpon and snook to the beach. It also had 9 to 13 foot seas forecast for Sunday, which is the other thing about fishing a few miles from the Stream in October: the window opens and shuts fast.

The tournament that proves the fishery is the Silver Sailfish Derby, which the West Palm Beach Fishing Club has run since January 1935 and calls the oldest running sailfish tournament in the world. It was one of the first to push catch and release, and the club credits it with the red release pennant you'll see on outriggers all winter. The 2027 derby is posted: captains' meeting Wednesday, January 6 at the clubhouse at 201 5th Street in West Palm Beach, fishing Thursday and Friday, January 7 and 8, and the dinner Saturday, January 9 at the Sailfish Club in Palm Beach. The fleet is capped at 50 boats and already sold out.

The rules on sailfish: FWC's minimum is 63 inches lower jaw to fork, one billfish per person per day, a federal HMS angling permit in federal waters, and any billfish you land has to be reported to NOAA within 24 hours. A sailfish you intend to release can't be lifted out of the water in federal waters. In practice nobody keeps one.

The Loxahatchee and Jupiter snook

The Loxahatchee was designated a National Wild and Scenic River on May 17, 1985: 7.6 miles from Riverbend Park downstream to Jonathan Dickinson State Park, 1.3 of them classed wild, 5.8 scenic and 0.5 recreational, managed by the state park and the National Park Service together. For a fisherman it's water that goes from fresh to salt as it comes down to Jupiter, and the salt end, from the state park through the Jupiter bridges to the inlet, is snook water.

Juno Bait's October 15 report rated the snook fishing fair, with live mullet along the seawalls and under boat docks in the Loxahatchee producing for people who put in the time, and fish on the bridges at night; the water was dirty, so both tides were working. The rules are statewide on this coast: closed December 15 through January 31 and June 1 through August 31, 28 to 32 inches total length, one fish per person per day, hook and line only, whole until you're ashore, and the $10 snook permit on top of your license. FWC's own advice is to check that the season is open before you buy the permit, because permit sales are final.

Lake Okeechobee

The west end of the county is the south shore of Lake Okeechobee, which FWC describes as 730 square miles and "nationally recognized" for largemouth bass and black crappie. FWC's current forecast, with the lake at 11.62 feet on September 21, 2026, says low water has let the vegetation come back, expects good pre-spawn bass this fall on topwater along the outside edge of the eelgrass, and says crappie picks up in November and December with January the best month for keepers. The rules: five bass a day, only one 16 inches or longer; 25 crappie, nothing under 10 inches. FWC recommends a guide if you're new to the lake, and I'd listen. The ramp is Torry Island Campground & Marina in Belle Glade, 5000 West Canal Street North, which the city describes as 45 miles west of the Palm Beaches, with new six-lane ramps, a bait and tackle store, full-hookup campsites and the swing bridge the city calls the state's only historic one. The county also lists freshwater ramps at Paul Rardin Park in Pahokee and South Bay RV Park.

The piers

Juno Beach Pier is 990 feet of ocean at 14775 U.S. 1, managed by Loggerhead Marinelife Center since 2014. It's $5 to fish, $3 for kids 12 and under and for veterans, $2 to watch, and the pier holds a license so you don't need your own. Hours are sunrise to sunset from March 1 through October 31 for turtle nesting; from November 1 through February 28 the center lists 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Plan around construction: a project that started June 1, 2026 is closing the pier in phases for about six months, and the stretch between the Pier House and the first shade structure went back under work on October 5. This week's bait shop report had blue runners, Spanish mackerel, a few pompano and a lot of sharks.

Lake Worth Beach Pier, officially the William O. Lockhart Municipal Pier, is open daily 6 a.m. to midnight according to the city. The city's site didn't post pier fees when I checked, so confirm at the gate.

Licenses, lobster and stone crab

A resident annual saltwater license is $17, five years is $79, and the shoreline license for fishing from land or a structure attached to it is free, though it isn't valid from a boat or from shore you reached by boat. Non-residents pay $47 a year. The snook permit is $10 a year and the spiny lobster permit $5, each on top of the license. Youth 8 to 15 is $17.

Two seasons matter this month. Recreational stone crab season opened October 15 and runs through May 1: claws only, 2 7/8 inches minimum, one gallon of claws per person or two per boat, up to five traps per person, no egg-bearing crabs, and anyone 16 or older needs FWC's free online trap registration first. Spiny lobster regular season is August 6 through March 31, six per person per day, carapace longer than 3 inches measured in the water, permit required. Next year's two-day sport season is July 28 and 29, 2027.

Ramps, marinas and dry stacks

The county runs six saltwater ramps, all in the north half of the county, on one permit: $50 plus tax for the calendar year, not prorated, or $15 plus tax for the day at the kiosk in the lot, credit card only. The cities run their own south of there.

If the boat isn't coming on a trailer: Sailfish Marina at 98 Lake Drive in Palm Beach Shores has 74 slips on four docks for boats from 25 to 180 feet with 13 feet at the dock, and bills itself as the closest marina to the Palm Beach Inlet, 45 miles from the Bahamas. In Jupiter, Loggerhead Marina at 3238 Casseekey Island Road has 257 dry stack slips for boats to 40 feet with a fuel dock, minutes from the inlet. In Boynton Beach, Boynton Harbor Marina is the city redevelopment agency's marina, and its fishing page lists the fleet: Chip's Ahoy, Great Day, Ham'r Time and Miller Time for charters and Seamist for drift fishing. No boat at all? Those charters and the Juno pier cover most of this post.

Where to live for the fish you want

The river and Jupiter Inlet: Jupiter and Tequesta. A dock on the Loxahatchee or the Jupiter side of the Intracoastal puts you on snook at dusk and, on a calm morning, through the inlet to the Stream in what I'd estimate at half an hour. The trade is the inlet itself: read the Coast Pilot paragraph above twice, and if you're the kind of boater who goes when the forecast says go, buy here. Loggerhead's dry stack is the alternative to a seawall and a lift.

The port inlet and the shortest run offshore: Singer Island and Palm Beach Shores, on the ocean side of the 65-foot Blue Heron Bridge with Sailfish Marina and the inlet at the south end, or Riviera Beach on the mainland side with Phil Foster's 24-hour ramps. This is where I'd put a buyer whose boat has a tower or a tall bridge, because nothing fixed stands between the slip and the ocean. If it's a condo, get the dockage rules and the reserve study before you fall for the view.

Boynton Inlet: Boynton Beach, which is where I'd start a buyer who wants an inlet and a smaller mortgage. The 18-foot fixed bridge and the Coast Pilot's warning are the trade: a center console or a flats boat is fine, a sailboat or a tower boat isn't, and a day on one of the marina's charters is a good way to learn the inlet before you run it yourself.

Boca Inlet: Boca Raton, where the inlet needs the most local knowledge of the four by NOAA's reckoning and the ramp permit is $210 a year inside the city limits and $775 outside. The city says a Boca Raton mailing address doesn't make you a city resident and tells you to check its city limits map, so confirm the address is actually in the city before you make an offer.

The lake: Belle Glade and Pahokee, 45 miles from the beach, if bass are the whole point. For most people the lake is a day trip and the Belle Glade campground is the overnight.

The Jupiter, West Palm Beach and Wellington comparison has prices, commutes and flood zones, the relocation page covers the move itself, and if you're choosing between this coast and the St. Lucie Inlet, the Treasure Coast guide is the same post for that county.

Questions anglers ask about Palm Beach County

How far offshore is the Gulf Stream from Palm Beach?

A few miles. On October 14, 2026 the National Weather Service in Miami put the west wall of the Gulf Stream 3 nautical miles east northeast of Lake Worth and 6 nautical miles east southeast of Jupiter Inlet, and NOAA's Coast Pilot describes it as only about 2 miles off West Palm Beach. Its position moves, so check the marine forecast the day you go.

When is sailfish season in Palm Beach County?

Visit Florida's billfish guide says the fish arrive soon after the first big cold front, typically in November, and stay until the last front, which can run from February into late March, with January, February, November and December the best months. The Silver Sailfish Derby, run by the West Palm Beach Fishing Club since 1935, fishes January 7 and 8, 2027.

Which Palm Beach County inlet is safest for a small boat?

Lake Worth Inlet at the Port of Palm Beach is the federal ship channel, with a 35-foot entrance channel and two jetties. NOAA's Coast Pilot calls Jupiter, Boynton and Boca Raton inlets dangerous and particularly hazardous to small boats not designed for open seas, and says people using them need local knowledge. Boynton also has an 18-foot fixed bridge.

What are the snook rules in Jupiter and the Loxahatchee River?

Snook is closed December 15 through January 31 and June 1 through August 31 on Florida's Atlantic coast. In season it's a 28 to 32 inch slot, one fish per person per day, hook and line only, and you need the $10 snook permit with your saltwater license. The fish has to stay whole until it's landed ashore.

How much does it cost to launch a boat in Palm Beach County?

At the six county saltwater ramps, including Burt Reynolds Park in Jupiter and Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach, a trailer permit is $15 plus tax a day or $50 plus tax a year. Boca Raton's Silver Palm Park is $210 a year for city residents and $775 for non-residents as of October 1, 2026, or $37 and $90 a day.

Do you need a fishing license on the Juno Beach Pier?

No, the pier holds a license that covers anglers on it, and admission is $5 to fish, $3 for kids 12 and under and veterans, and $2 for spectators. Hours are sunrise to sunset March 1 through October 31 and extended into the night from November through February. A construction project that began June 1, 2026 is closing sections in phases.

Is Lake Okeechobee worth the drive from the coast?

FWC calls it a nationally recognized bass and crappie fishery, and its fall 2026 forecast expects good pre-spawn bass with crappie picking up in November and December. Belle Glade's Torry Island ramp is 45 miles west of the Palm Beaches by the city's description, with six lanes, a bait shop and a campground. The bass limit is five a day with only one 16 inches or longer.
