Quick answer: No Brightline station is open in St. Lucie or Martin County, and the Stuart station was described in February 2026 as not ready until spring 2029 at the earliest. Train horns at public crossings follow federal rules, and a quiet zone can end routine horn sounding at crossings if safety requirements are met, although engineers may still sound the horn for safety. St. Lucie County is studying quiet zones for 23 crossings, but I found no application filed. I did not find a sourced study measuring how horns or crossings affect home values, so I will not predict a price effect.
Buyers near the tracks ask three questions. Will the trains be a problem? Will a station change the neighborhood? Will any of it affect the value? This article answers what the current sources support and marks what they do not. Rail projects and quiet-zone decisions change often, so each status here is dated.
Where the stations stand
A secondary summary of Brightline's service lists Orlando, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and MiamiCentral as operating stations. No station in St. Lucie or Martin County is open, and trains do not stop in Stuart. Brightline selected downtown Stuart in a March 4, 2024 announcement, which then expected a 2026 opening. In February 2026, WFLX reported the project was in limbo, with the station not ready until spring 2029 at the earliest. Martin County sought $69.2 million in federal funding for an $87 million project, of which $60 million was for the station. The City of Fort Pierce submitted its own proposal in 2024 and says it stands behind it. I found no later status for that proposal.
How horns are sounded at crossings
Federal rules set a standard horn pattern at public crossings: two long blasts, one short and one long, starting 15 to 20 seconds before the crossing. For trains traveling over 60 miles per hour, the rules do not allow the horn to begin sounding more than one-quarter mile before the crossing (49 CFR 222.21). The rule is in the federal regulations for railroad crossing safety (49 CFR Part 222).
What a quiet zone does, and what it does not
A public authority can create a quiet zone under federal rules. It may do so without federal approval if it adds safety measures at every crossing or meets a risk-index threshold. Otherwise it must apply to the Federal Railroad Administration (49 CFR 222.39 and 222.43). In a quiet zone, routine horns are not sounded at the crossings, but the engineer may sound the horn for safety. That is the limit of the benefit, and it depends on whether the zone is in effect at a particular crossing.
Palm Beach County has several quiet zones in effect or approved. Palm Beach Gardens approved its zone on July 24, 2025. Jupiter's zone took effect August 8, 2025, covering six crossings within town limits. Boca Raton's took effect May 30, 2018. Those are examples of how zones are created, not a guide to any particular street, and the crossing names come from a 2024 article rather than from the cities' pages.
St. Lucie County and Port St. Lucie
St. Lucie County is studying quiet zones for 23 crossings over about 22 miles: nine in unincorporated areas, six in Fort Pierce, three in St. Lucie Village, one owned by FDOT and four private. The source I read reports that no application has been filed and that the cost is unknown. The article's date was not shown, so check the current status with the county. I did not find a quiet zone or a quiet-zone study for Port St. Lucie in the sources I read, and I did not pull a list of Port St. Lucie crossings.
In Martin County, commissioners voted 3 to 2 on May 19, 2026 to put quiet zones on a future agenda. No zone has been approved. Riviera Beach, Tequesta and Lake Park were discussed in a 2024 article, and I did not verify their current status.
How to check a specific crossing
The Federal Railroad Administration's National Highway-Rail Crossing Inventory is public, and it was updated September 3, 2026. Use it to look up crossings near an address. Then ask the city or county whether a quiet zone is in effect or pending at that crossing. Spend time at the property at different hours, because a crossing that is quiet on a Sunday afternoon can be busy on a weekday morning.
Safety
Operation Lifesaver reports about 2,226 crossing incidents in 2025, a preliminary figure. Keep rail safety in mind on a property near the tracks. Never walk on or near the tracks, and teach children the same rule.
Does it affect value?
I could not find a sourced study that measures how train horns, crossings or noise affect home values in Florida, so I will not predict a price effect. Some data exists for station areas. A 2023 Wall Street Journal analysis, reported by Florida Realtors, found that home values near the Fort Lauderdale station rose 67 percent from 2018 to 2022, compared with a 33 percent county median, and near the Miami station rose 83 percent against a 38 percent area median. Those figures describe station areas, not crossings or noise, and they do not isolate any train effect. A 2001 summary of rail studies, which I could only read in secondary form, said there was little support for the idea that proximity to rail reduces property values. It gave no figures and did not address noise or crossings.
What to do before you decide
Look up the crossings near the property. Ask the city or county about quiet zone status. Visit at different times of day. Ask the seller and neighbors about the train schedule. Ask an appraiser or lender how they treat nearby rail in the market you are considering, and ask a real estate attorney about any disclosure that applies to the property.
Questions buyers ask about Brightline
Is there a Brightline station in St. Lucie or Martin County?
No station is open. The Stuart station was described in February 2026 as not ready until spring 2029 at the earliest. Check the current status with Brightline and Martin County.
Will train horns sound at my house?
Only if the nearest crossing does not have a quiet zone in effect. Even in a quiet zone, the engineer may sound the horn for safety. The crossing inventory and the local government can confirm the status for a specific address.
Does St. Lucie County have quiet zones?
Not yet. The county is studying quiet zones for 23 crossings, and I found no application filed in the source I read.
How do I check a crossing?
Use the Federal Railroad Administration's National Highway-Rail Crossing Inventory, which is public, and then confirm the quiet zone status with the local government.
Does a nearby railroad lower value?
I did not find a sourced study that measures the effect of horns, crossings or noise on Florida home values. Station-area price data exists, but it is not a noise measure, so ask an appraiser about the specific market.
