October on the Space Coast: Boo at the Zoo, a Golf Cart Parade, the Mullet Run and the First Night You Open the Windows (2026)
Quick answer: October on the Space Coast averages a high of 84 and a low of 69 in Melbourne, and the dry season usually arrives around the 17th, which is the week the humidity breaks and you open the windows for the first time since May. The calendar: Boo at the Zoo every weekend at Brevard Zoo and a haunted trail on Friday and Saturday nights, the Cocoa Village Fall Art and Craft Fair October 17 and 18, Kidtoberfest at Wickham Park October 23, the sheriff's Haunted Jail Trail in Cocoa, Melbourne's indoor trick-or-treat at the Auditorium October 24, and on Halloween itself the Cocoa Village Fall Festival followed by a golf cart parade through the Village at 7. Outside: the mullet run at Sebastian Inlet, stone crab season opening October 15, sea turtle season wrapping up on the 31st, and a Falcon 9 scheduled for the 13th. If you're house hunting, this is the month to see a place with the windows open and the AC off.
People ask me what the Space Coast is like in the fall, and the honest answer is that October is the month it starts earning its reputation. September is still summer. By the middle of October the rain shuts off, the mornings drop into the 60s, the mullet are pouring down the beach, and every town from Titusville to Palm Bay has a Halloween thing going. Here's what I'd put on the calendar, with the dates I could confirm in early October. Things change, so check before you drive.
The weather, and the date that matters
Melbourne's October normals are a high of 84 and a low of 69, with about four and a half inches of rain for the month. Most of that rain falls in the first half. The National Weather Service office in Melbourne puts the median start of the dry season at October 17, the median first reading below 60 degrees at October 22, and the first reading below 50 around November 10. So the second half of the month is the payoff: dry air, cool mornings, warm afternoons, and the ocean still in the mid 70s at the inlet. If you've only visited in July, you have not met this place.
One note for this year. The Weather Service's dry season outlook, issued at the end of September, calls for better odds of above normal rain and severe weather this winter because of El Niño. That's a winter story, not an October one, but it's worth knowing if you're planning a move in the new year.
Cocoa Village: the best Halloween in the county
If you only do one town for Halloween, do Cocoa Village. The Fall Art and Craft Fair, the 45th one, is Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, from 10 in the morning through the Village streets; past years ran to 5 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday, with a couple hundred artists, free admission and dogs welcome. There are historic ghost tours the evenings of the 17th and 24th at 6. The Halloween Pub Crawl is Saturday, October 24, 6 to 11, starting at the Elks Lodge on Florida Avenue, $20 in advance or $30 that day, with a costume contest and a 50/50 for The Children's Hunger Project. That same Saturday morning, the Autumn in Bloom Festival at the Brevard Discovery Garden on Lake Drive runs 9 to 3, free, with a couple thousand native plants for sale, food trucks and a kids' zone, which is a good way to spend the daylight before the crawl.
Then Halloween itself, a Saturday this year. The Fall Festival in Cocoa Village runs 3 to 7 at Riverfront Park on Riveredge Boulevard: a trick-or-treat trail through the merchants, a bounce house, pumpkin decorating, a pet costume contest at 3, kids at 4, groups at 5. It's $5 per child or five cans of food for the Central Brevard Sharing Center. At 7 the Halloween Golf Cart Parade steps off from Rosa L. Jones Drive and does two laps of the Village. It's the fourth year for it, free to watch, and exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. The Village Idiot Pub throws a street party at the park from 6 to 10 for the grown-ups.
Brevard Zoo: Boo by day, Beware by night
The zoo in Viera runs two things in October. Boo at the Zoo is every Saturday and Sunday, 10 to 3, included with admission: shows at 11 and 1 on the Cones Stage, the Boo Choo Train, a swamp safari, a fossil dig and a costume catwalk. There's a sensory-friendly session on the 17th with timed entry and a Haunted Harvest Brunch on the 25th. Regular admission is $34.95 for adults online, $22.95 for kids 3 to 11.
New this year is Beware the Night, an evening event on select nights through October, 7 to 10 with last entry at 9, tickets from $33, under 3 free. The River's Revenge haunted trail runs Fridays and Saturdays and the zoo recommends it for 13 and up. The zoo's own press release and its web page disagree on the hours, so trust the ticket page when you book.
Melbourne, Palm Bay and the county parks
Kidtoberfest at Wickham Park is Friday, October 23, 5 to 10, the 12th year, free, with candy, face painting, food trucks and a Nightmare Before Christmas showing on the outdoor screen around 7. The City of Melbourne's Halloween Spooktacular is Saturday, October 24, 10 to 2, inside the Melbourne Auditorium on East Hibiscus, free, with 40-plus candy stations and air conditioning, which matters when the costume is a full dinosaur. There's an adult flashlight pumpkin hunt at the Crane Community Center on the 16th if you want something stranger.
In the Eau Gallie Arts District, First Friday is October 2 on Highland Avenue, 5:30 to 8:30, and the district's Halloween festival has been the third Saturday the last couple of years, with a free trick-or-treat route down Highland, hayrides, a costume contest and a dog costume walk. The Ghostly Gecko 5K is confirmed for Saturday, October 17, at 6 at Eau Gallie Square Park, which points to the 17th for the festival too, but the district hadn't posted it when I wrote this.
Palm Bay's Fall Fest at Fred Poppe Regional Park was the last Saturday of October last year, 5 to 8, free, with a trunk-or-treat, a costume contest and a haunted hayride; the city hadn't posted 2026 when I checked. Space Coast Harley-Davidson in Palm Bay has a fall festival the 10th, Bikes, Trikes and Beaches the 15th through the 18th with live music, and a trunk-or-treat at noon on Halloween.
North county: the Harvest Festival at the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville is Saturday the 24th, 10 to 3, with live animals and the Florida Wildlife Hospital; the North Brevard Fall Festival at Sand Point Park in Titusville is that evening, 6 to 9, with a trunk-or-treat and costume contest; and Kennedy Space Center runs its STEAM Halloween stations daily October 19 through 31, with the big day on the 24th, 10 to 4, included with admission. Brevard residents get the Salute to Brevard rate at KSC October 12 through 25, $21 for adults and $16 for kids plus tax, bought on site.
The scary stuff
The Brevard County Sheriff's Office runs a Haunted Jail Trail on the grounds behind the jail in Cocoa. It's back for 2026, $20 through Eventbrite, check in by 10:30; last year the nights were the 16th, 17th, 18th, 24th and 25th, and I'd expect the same pattern. The county's own Haunted Trail at Rotary Park on Merritt Island runs the 16th, 17th, 23rd and 24th, 7 to 10, $10 for 13 and up and $5 for kids. Foggy Bluff at the Green Gables house on Harbor City Boulevard in Melbourne did Friday and Saturday nights through Halloween last year, $20 adults, with a not-so-scary version for small kids on two Sunday evenings; check their listing for this year's nights.
Pumpkin patches
The church patches are the good ones, and the money goes to good places. Wesley United Methodist on Meadowlane Avenue in Melbourne usually runs from early October through the 30th, 9 to 7, with $1 hayrides. Ascension Catholic on North Harbor City opens mid-month. There's a Viera patch on North Wickham Road, Satellite Beach United Methodist on Lee Avenue from about the 15th, one on Gator Drive on Merritt Island, and Our Lady of Grace and Malabar Baptist on Malabar Road in Palm Bay. Buy late if you're carving; a carved pumpkin on a Florida porch is a three-day pumpkin. I wrote the whole method up in the pumpkin carving post.
Outside: mullet, stone crabs, turtles and a launch
The mullet run is the reason half the trucks at Sebastian Inlet are from out of county in October. The bait pours south along the beach from mid September through the end of the month, and snook, tarpon, jacks and sharks work the edges of the schools. The inlet district's reports put the water at 74 to 77 degrees this time of year. The north jetty is the spot; two rods per angler, no cast netting on the eastern deck, and read the sign about yielding to boats.
Stone crab season opens October 15 and runs to May 1: one gallon of claws per person, two per boat, claws at least two and seven-eighths inches, and you register your traps with FWC. Lobster's regular season has been open since early August and runs through March. Stone crab night at home on the lagoon is one of the better arguments for living here.
Sea turtle nesting season ends October 31, and the county's beachfront lighting rules run through the same date, so the ocean side of A1A stays dark after 9 until November. The Barrier Island Center in Melbourne Beach does a free Sea Turtle 101 and beach cleanup on the 24th at 10. Brevard set a record this year: more than 12,000 green turtle nests and 4,100 loggerhead nests in the Archie Carr refuge alone by late August.
Launches. There's a Falcon 9 cargo mission to the space station scheduled for October 13 at 6:33 in the morning, a Vulcan carrying Amazon's satellites penciled for the 28th and another Falcon 9 for the 30th, both still to be confirmed. The Visit Space Coast launch page and app are the only schedule I trust; they ping you two hours and five minutes before liftoff. From Melbourne you watch from the causeway or your own yard. From Titusville you can almost hear the countdown.
Surf and the lagoon
The NKF Rich Salick Surf Festival is Columbus Day weekend, October 10 through 12, at the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, and it's been the surf event here for decades. Cocoa Beach Main Street's Friday Fest falls on the 16th this month, 6 to 10 downtown, with a fall theme and craft beer. The Indian River Lagoon Fest is Saturday the 17th at Front Street Park in Melbourne, free, and worth an hour if you're thinking about living on the water: the people who monitor the lagoon are there, and the news is better than it was. The water management district measured about 17,000 hectares of seagrass in the lagoon in 2025, up from under 10,000 two years earlier. The half-cent sales tax that pays for the cleanup is on the November ballot for renewal.
If you're looking at houses this month
October is the best month of the year to see a house honestly. Open the windows. Turn off the AC and see how the place breathes. Look at the roof while it's dry and before the winter inspections pile up. Ask about the lighting ordinance if the house is on the beach side; it's not a problem, but you should know what it means for your porch lights. And if you're buying a boat along with the house, go stand on the Sebastian Inlet jetty one evening during the run and decide whether you want to be a lagoon person or an inlet person. That decision picks the neighborhood more than any spreadsheet does.
The Melbourne area page and the Space Coast relocation page cover the towns and the trade-offs, and the AI assistant in the corner of this page can answer the quick questions at midnight when I'm asleep.
