December on the Space Coast: Two Boat Parades, Surfing Santas, the Nutcracker at the King Center and a Shark Drop at Midnight (2026)

Quick answer: December in Melbourne averages a high of 73 and a low of 57 and is the driest month of the year, with the ocean off Cocoa Beach still around 70. The first weekend is the big one: the Light Up Viera parade is usually the Saturday after Thanksgiving, then on Saturday, December 5, the Merritt Island Holiday Parade at 10, the Nutcracker at the King Center at 2 and 7 (and Sunday at 2), the Palm Bay Holiday Light Parade in the evening and the Eau Gallie tree lighting. The second weekend: the Cocoa Village boat parade and tree lighting Friday the 11th, the Cocoa and Rockledge parade Saturday the 12th at 10, and the Cocoa Beach street parade and Banana River boat parade that same Saturday. Then Surfing Santas on Cocoa Beach at 7:30 on Christmas Eve morning, and the Shark Drop at midnight on New Year's Eve. If you're buying, the date that matters is December 31: own and live in the house by then and you can homestead it for 2027.

Every December somebody up north texts me a photo of their driveway and asks what it's like down here. The answer is 73 degrees, no rain to speak of, a boat parade on whichever river is closest, and a few hundred people in Santa suits surfing Cocoa Beach on Christmas Eve morning. It's also the month the whole county decides to throw a parade in the same two weekends, so you can't do everything. Here's what I'd put on the calendar, with the dates I could confirm in early October. Some of these had only last year's date posted when I wrote this; I say so where that's the case. Check before you go.

The weather

Melbourne's December normals are a high of 73 and a low of 57, and it's the driest month of the year with the fewest rainy days. A front comes through every week or ten days, the morning after is in the 40s, everyone finds their one jacket, and by lunch it's back in the 70s. The ocean at Cocoa Beach averages about 70 degrees in December because the Gulf Stream isn't far off the coast. That's why the Surfing Santas are in wetsuits and not drysuits, and why people swim on Christmas Day without it being a dare.

The first weekend: parades and the Nutcracker

Light Up Viera has been the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which puts it on November 28 this year: a Christmas parade at 6 from Stadium Parkway to Viera Boulevard, ending at Manatee Elementary with fireworks. That's last year's pattern; Viera hadn't posted 2026 yet. Same night, the Downtown Melbourne tree lighting on New Haven Avenue, 4 to 8.

Thursday, December 3 (last year's date, the first Thursday): Parrish Healthcare's Gift of Light tree lighting and fireworks in Titusville on North Washington Avenue, 5 to 7:30, free.

Saturday, December 5, confirmed: the Merritt Island Holiday Parade at 10 in the morning. The Nutcracker at the King Center on North Wickham Road, 2 and 7, with the Space Coast Ballet and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra playing it live, which is rare for a regional Nutcracker and worth the ticket; there's a Sunday 2 o'clock show on the 6th too, and last year the Sunday show was narrated for kids. Breakfast with Santa at the Wickham Park Community Center is that morning. The Eau Gallie Arts District tree lighting at Eau Gallie Square Park has been the first Saturday: Santa at 5:30, the lighting at 6, fake snow at 8. The Palm Bay Holiday Light Parade was the first Saturday last year, 6 in the evening, about three miles from the Eastern Florida State College Palm Bay campus up San Filippo Drive and west on Malabar Road to City Hall. Light Up Rockledge at the Civic Hub was the same afternoon, 4 to 7, free with a food donation. Cocoa Beach's Winterfest on Minutemen Causeway was the first Saturday too, 10 to 5. And the Ocean Reef Beach Festival at Pelican Beach Park in Satellite Beach is the first Saturday in December by tradition.

That's a lot for one day. My pick if you have small kids: Merritt Island parade in the morning, the Nutcracker at 2, Eau Gallie lights at 6. If you don't: Winterfest on the beach, then the Palm Bay parade.

The second weekend: the boats

Friday, December 11, confirmed: the Cocoa Village Holiday Boat Parade, which calls itself the largest charitable boat parade on the Space Coast and benefits the Sharing Center of Central Brevard. The boats start at 6 in Rockledge and come up the Indian River past Cocoa Village, and the Holiday Tree Lighting and Movie in the Park at Riverfront Park runs 5 to 8:30 with the tree lit around 7:30 as the last boats pass. Lee Wenner Park and the Village riverfront are the viewing spots. Get there by 5 and eat in the Village first.

Saturday, December 12: the Cocoa and Rockledge Holiday Parade at 10 in the morning, confirmed, with this year's theme "Gingerbread Lane." Then Cocoa Beach's double feature. The Cocoa Beach Christmas Street Parade has been the second Saturday at 2 downtown, run by Kiwanis and the merchants; last year's route ran from Orlando Avenue and North 4th Street west on South First and north on Brevard Avenue. The Cocoa Beach Christmas Boat Parade, the Rotary Club's, is the same evening at 6 on the Banana River, starting near Centennial Park on SR 520 across from the hospital. Watch from the Sunset Cafe at 520 and the river, from Wildlife Watersports on Manatee Lane, from the end of South Banana River Boulevard, or from Cove Park on McNabb Parkway, which the city opens for it. The 2026 dates for the Cocoa Beach parades hadn't been posted when I wrote this; the pattern has held for years. Also that day in Cocoa Village: the Hot Cocoa Crawl at noon and the Santa Stumble pub crawl at 6 from the Elks Lodge, and the Art and Craft Holiday Bazaar runs the 5th and 6th.

The Melbourne Light Parade is a volunteer-run charity parade that's been going since 1993 and nearly died in 2023 before a donation saved it; it's been the second Saturday at 6, two miles from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard south to Hibiscus and west to Gateway Drive. The organizers hadn't posted a 2026 date when I checked, so look before you go, and if you can, give. The Titusville Christmas Parade at Titusville High School was the second Saturday at 6 the last time I could find it. South Brevard used to run a lighted boat parade from Sebastian Inlet Marina along the Intracoastal through Micco and Grant; I couldn't confirm it's still running.

Lights, and what's missing

The Brevard Zoo ran Lights On, a nighttime art experience with 30-plus illuminated installations, from mid November through mid January last year, Thursday through Sunday 6 to 9, $45 on Thursdays and Sundays and $55 on Fridays and Saturdays; the zoo hadn't posted the 2026 edition when I wrote this, but it has a Kids' Holiday Hangout on the 12th and a Winter Sprinter 3K on the 22nd. Cocoa Village's Moonlight Music is December 4 at 6 at Riverfront Park, and the Holiday Bike Parade is Friday the 18th at 5.

Two things people ask about that aren't happening: the Space Coast Lightfest, the drive-through that ran at Wickham Park for years and moved to Palm Bay, was canceled in 2023 until further notice and hasn't returned, and the Space Coast Art Festival is skipping 2026. Save the gas.

Christmas Eve: the Surfing Santas

This is the one. Surfing Santas of Cocoa Beach is confirmed for Thursday, December 24, 7:30 in the morning to noon, on the beach at the end of Minutemen Causeway in front of Coconuts on the Beach. It's free. It started in 2009 when one family went out in Santa suits; last year, the 17th one, about 500 surfers paddled out and the crowd was estimated above 10,000. It raises money for the Florida Surf Museum, Grind for Life and Who We Play For, more than $100,000 so far. Park early, walk, bring a chair and a coffee, and stay for the costume contest. If you're moving here with kids, this becomes the family tradition that replaces whatever you did in the snow.

New Year's Eve

Cocoa Beach does a Shark Drop, now in its fourth year: the party runs from 7 at The Tropics, Cat 5 and Hunkerdown downtown, and a hammerhead comes down at midnight. The pier has its own New Year's Eve plans most years. I couldn't confirm a Melbourne or Port Canaveral fireworks show for this year, so if you want fireworks over water, the Cocoa Beach Pier is the safe bet, and the beach the morning of January 1 is empty and about 70 degrees.

Buying in December

Florida's homestead rule is simple and it's worth real money: if you own the house and it's your permanent residence on January 1 and you file with the county property appraiser by March 1, you get the exemption for that year, up to $50,000 off the assessed value. The exemption also starts the Save Our Homes cap, which holds your assessment increases to 3 percent a year no matter what the market does. A December 31 closing gets you all of that for 2027; a January 2 closing waits a year. Sellers know this too, which is why late December closings happen. The Space Coast relocation page and the Melbourne area page have the rest.
